Broad concepts of pharmacology and an overview of major drug groups are addressed in this course. For each major drug group, the pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics, pharmacotherapeutics, adverse drug reactions, and nursing management will be covered. The laboratory introduces the nursing student to the concepts and techniques of dosage calculation and medication administration by a variety of routes. Application of basic math concepts to complex conversion of dosages between various systems of weights and volumes is learned. Students apply critical thinking skills to the calculations needed for accurate administration of medications.
